SEO and Google Ads solve different parts of discovery. The right priority depends on your starting point, budget, service area, and ability to turn inquiries into jobs. Neither removes the need for a useful website and a responsive team.
What SEO contributes
SEO work makes your important pages more useful and easier for search engines to understand. For a tree business, that can mean clearer service pages, relevant local information, a sound technical foundation, and real project evidence. It is an ongoing investment, not a switch that produces a guaranteed position.
What ads contribute
Paid search lets you prepare focused campaigns around chosen services and locations. Platform approval, budget, competition, and ad quality still affect delivery. You pay for the advertising separately from management, and meaningful conversion tracking is part of knowing whether that investment is useful.
Do not advertise a confusing page
A customer seeking pruning or removal needs clear scope and an estimate process. Someone looking for an arborist consultation, ongoing plant health care, or wildfire mitigation needs a different page and a relevant next step. Send traffic to a relevant page instead of assuming every visitor will navigate a generic homepage.
A practical starting sequence
First, check that the site and contact process work. Second, choose the services and territory worth prioritizing. Third, set up the agreed tracking and define a qualified inquiry. Then divide effort between organic improvements and focused advertising within a budget the business can sustain.
Judge each channel honestly
Do not label an increase in inquiries after starting an advertising campaign as an SEO result. Review paid and organic data separately where attribution allows, and acknowledge gaps. Customer feedback about calls and estimates is often essential context.
Google advises that SEO benefits commonly take four months to a year after changes begin. This is general guidance, not a project deadline. Read Google’s advice on hiring an SEO.
